Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800) is a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel specifically designed to offer exceptional resistance to galling and wear. It provides significantly better resistance to seizing and fretting compared to conventional stainless steels such as 304 and 316, even in metal-to-metal contact without lubrication. In addition to its outstanding wear properties, Nitronic 60 delivers good corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments, along with higher strength than standard austenitic grades in the annealed condition.
This alloy maintains its toughness and ductility over a broad temperature range and remains essentially non-magnetic. It is readily fabricated and welded using conventional stainless steel practices, making it suitable for components such as fasteners, valve stems, pump shafts, bearings, and other parts exposed to sliding or abrasive conditions. Nitronic 60 is widely used in industrial, marine, and aerospace applications where both wear resistance and corrosion resistance are critical
