Erie Press (Skunkworks Edge Press 5)
Rare, nearly impossible to come by… Automatic Compression Molding Press from the famed Skunkworks in Palmdale, California. This press along with several others were commissioned for the F-22 Raptor program years before they came into existence and decommissioned by 2009. When I found out about them through a friend, I immediately caught a redeye from FL to CA and went to the hangar facility the following am to inspect the presses and ultimately buy them. That same day they were rigged and ultimately shipped to my factory in Sarasota Florida where they have now resided ever since.

These two largely identical presses have been through a complete overhaul and refit to include:
• updated electronics
• touch screen PLC control
• Firmware enhancements
• Thicker Cogetherm-M insulator plates so the operational temperature rating could be increased from 350F to 800F.
• We added steel bolster plates with 1/2-13 threaded holes every 2x2" for easy mounting of molds in any size.
• They were completely and professionally repainted.
• Custom shock pads were made and are included.
• They retain all the original markings, nameplates and placard depicting the F22 Raptor hurling at you with the name of “Edge press 5” or “Edge Press 6” depending on which model you purchased.
• All are low hour machines that have been used for only low to medium volume aerospace and defense applications.
• This is a piece of history (very hard to put a price on that)
• Recently repacked hydraulic cylinder
• Everything is functional and works properly
• Automatic open
• Automatic close
• Slow-speed close adjustment
• Tonnage adjustment
• 6 zones of electric cartridge heaters
• The machine has new/upgraded Tempco heaters,
• Pneumatic safety bar for when the press is all the way open.
• Can be operated for both thermoset and thermoplastic materials.
• Ancillary equipment is required for thermoplastics and Rapid Composites has an integrated system/solutions for this in inventory, that is also for sale.
• Either of the two different edge-presses for sale can run, some of the fastest thermoset and thermoplastic composites, molding processes in the world (most are <8 minutes and some are in as little as 45 seconds). Call for more information.
Buyer can see this press under power for inspection. Must be U.S. Persons as we are an ITAR Controlled facility.
Rapid Composites (RC) can arrange shipping anywhere within the Continental United States. Buyer will be responsible for any Professional Rigging, Trucking/Transport costs. Riggers must be licensed and bonded. Insurance is highly recommended. A Low-Boy-Truck is recommended as well being these machines are 12’ tall and may require tipping.
RC has 3-D Models of these machines and is capable of providing this data to any purchasers upon request. Also, RC can provide design and machining services and has a host of extra parts for these machines including spare heaters, fuses, controllers, filters, pressure gauges, etc.
