Overview
Refrigerated Air Compressor Dryers

This is used Central Pneumatic Industrial refrigerated compressed air dryer, model 40211 — a compact 3-in-1 refrigerated dryer sold for shop compressors. It is still listed new around $650, so used units show up regularly at auction, surplus, and shop-liquidation sites.
Here is a practical deep-dive: specs, how it actually works, install notes, known weak points (especially important on a used unit), and what owners report.
It is a small cabinet refrigerated dryer that cools incoming compressed air so water vapor condenses, then separates and drains that water. Harbor Freight markets it as a 3-in-1 system: pre-refrigeration, evaporation/cooling, and air/moisture separation. Marketing copy says it can remove up to about 90% of moisture and lower dew point to about 36°F.
It is aimed at garage and light-industrial use — painting, media blasting, plasma cutting, pneumatic tools — not medical air or hyperbaric use.
Typical appearance: beige cabinet, front control panel with power light, problem/overheat light, on/off switch, and a refrigerant temperature/pressure gauge.
Hot, wet air from the compressor enters the dryer. A small refrigeration circuit (compressor + condenser + evaporator) cools the air. Moisture condenses, a separator knocks the liquid out, and a drain dumps it. Dried air leaves the outlet.
That 36°F dew-point number is typical for inexpensive refrigerated dryers. It is not instrument-air or -40°F desiccant performance. In a humid shop it is usually enough to stop water spraying out of tools, fish-eyes in paint, and short plasma-consumable life. It will not make air bone-dry if you overload it, feed it very hot air, or skip pre-filtration.
Best practice (owners and the manual agree):
Aftercooler or long pipe run first so air is not still 150–175°F at the dryer inlet
Particulate/coalescing filter before the dryer
Regulator and (if tools need it) lubricator after
Bypass valves so you can isolate the dryer
