Overview
No-Till Drills

The PH Outdoors G5 is a five-foot no-till drill for food plots, cover crops and smaller fields, with an 8.9-bushel seed box and eight rows on 7.5-inch spacing. Double-disc openers cut narrow slots through vegetation and surface residue, while rubber packing wheels close the slots and firm soil around the seed. A ground-driven variable gearbox adjusts the seeding rate, and a reversible calibration tray lets you catch and weigh seed before planting.
Seed and seed-box choices
For cereal cover crops and food plots, PH Outdoors provides starting settings for spring oats, cereal rye, winter triticale and wheat/rye/pea blends. Its chart also covers soybeans, clover and alfalfa. The main box can meter both large and small seed.
Consider the optional small seed box for very low seeding rates. When planting grain and small seed together, it lets you carry the small seed separately and release it ahead of the packing wheels for shallower placement. For fluffy native grass seed, PH offers an optional native seed box with an auger agitator to keep seed feeding.
For a lawn on a prepared seedbed, we also offer the Brillion LSS-6 landscape seeder. It broadcasts seed between packing rollers across the working width.
Seed rate and planting depth
The gate setting matches the size of the seed. The gearbox setting controls how much seed is metered, with a sight glass showing the selected setting. Seed size, coating and the proportions in a blend affect how much weight passes through the meter, so calibrate with the actual seed lot.
The reversible calibration tray catches seed for weighing. Follow the G5 procedure in the operator’s manual: after priming the meters, collect the output from 26 drive-wheel turns and multiply the seed weight in pounds by 81 to find pounds per acre. Adjust the gearbox and repeat until it delivers your target rate.
The rear depth pins provide reference settings, and the tractor’s top link makes finer adjustments. Make a short field pass and uncover seed to check the actual placement. Soil firmness and residue can change penetration; the G5 has an integrated weight bar for optional suitcase weights when more weight is needed. Set depth for the seed you’re planting, especially when a mix contains small seed that needs shallow placement.
Tractor fit
PH Outdoors specifies a tractor of at least 40 HP with at least 2,400 pounds of three-point lift capacity measured 24 inches behind the lift eyes. That measurement matters because the drill’s weight sits behind the tractor. Allow for seed and any added weights when checking lift capacity and ballast. Adjustable storage legs support the drill when it is unhitched.
